George Merton Sterling lived life with a deep appreciation for the great outdoors, history, and the simple joy of a good game. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on July 23, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born on June 24, 1944, to Merton Herbert Sterling and Margaret Scanlon Sterling, George lived his childhood in Tooele and graduated Tooele High School in 1963. He worked a variety of jobs throughout his life. He would often talk about the days as a janitor at the University of Utah. But his most rewarding job was driving a forklift. After retirement he moved from Sandy to North Ogden. His home in Ogden was his little place of heaven — a welcoming sanctuary where he loved to spend his time. He enjoyed hobbies like reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, and caring for his fish. A true sports enthusiast, he cheered passionately through every season for his favorite sport teams: the Utah Utes, New York Yankees, and the Indianapolis Colts.

George was often mistaken for Santa Claus. He happily embraced the role, winking at wide-eyed boys and girls and gently reminding them to keep believing and to listen to their moms and dads.

Some of his family&rquo;s fondest memories were born from his love of adventure. George was always ready to pack up the old Chevy truck and head out on the open road. Whether it was river rafting, camping under the stars, or taking unforgettable family road trips, he taught those around him to embrace history and explore the world.

Above all, George&rquo;s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted, cherished father to his daughter, a proud father- in-law and an adoring grandfather to his grandsons, who brought endless light to his life.

George was an unassuming man with a warm heart and an adventurous spirit. He will leave an enduring legacy in the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

George is survived by his sister Margaret E. Dennis (Robert Frost) of Kenwood CA, his daughter Reagan Risbeck (Andy) and his grandsons Wyatt and Zackary of Layton UT. In addition to, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday September 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at his daughter&rquo;s home, 838 Kirk Street, Layton, Utah. Friends and family are invited to honor his life at an open house.
